- Human Genome Project
an international scientific project to identify and map the genes of the human genome, based in the US; begun in 1990; first complete results released in 2003 with continuing analysis; potential applications in medicine and other areas. Abbrev.: HGP
The Human Genome Project was formally launched in October 1990. The original plan was for it to last for 15 years but technological advances saw it conclude earlier in April 2003. The aims were to identify all the estimated 20 000–25 000 genes in human DNA, to determine the three million chemical base pairs making up human DNA and to store the results on a publicly available database making them accessible for further biological study. Potential investigations and applications have been opened up in molecular medicine, medical risk assessment, bioarchaeology, evolution and human migration, DNA forensics and biotechnological applications in agriculture and livestock breeding.
